Different Types of Laser Cutting Services and Machines

Find out more about QSM Fabrication’s laser cutting, 3D laser cutting and smart bending services available now!

The fabrication industry hasn’t been the same since laser cutting was introduced to the sheet metal market back in the 1980’s. Since this introduction it has vastly changed the way that we manufacture parts, making it easier to deliver high quality cut parts on time and under budget. It was always John Siciliano’s dream, as managing director of QSM Fabrications, to own his very own laser cutter since seeing the remarkable impact they have had on the industry. In 2019, this dream was realised upon the procurement of the state-of-the-art, Japanese made Amada ENSIS-3015-RI 3KW Fiber Laser. QSM now not only offers laser cutting services, but 3D laser cutting and smart bending as well.

Laser Cutting

Laser cutting is a kind of technology that utilises a concentrated beam of light to cut through different kinds of metals and because the light beam is so focused, it generates a large amount of energy towards the piece of metal resulting in ultimately burning, vaporising, and melting whatever comes in its way. QSM’s integrated laser cutting services and intelligent programming software are designed to facilitate top-tier outcomes and allow you to develop a flat pattern that can later be rolled, folded or welded to the correct dimensions. Our laser can cut materials including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, titanium, copper, and brass. Regardless of whether you need laser-cut stainless steel or tube laser cutting, we can get the job done.

Some of the machine’s features include:

  • Maximum sheet cutting dimensions are 3000mm long by 1500mm wide.
  • Our dual-shuttle tables allow faster changeover of sheets, allowing cutting to take place while the already cut parts are unpicked from the rest. At the same time, ENSIS beam control technology manipulates the fibre laser beam so that it is perfectly matched to the material and thickness being processed, reducing the cost of consumables and increasing productivity and efficiency.
  • Our German made racking technology ensures we hold stock of most materials under our roof ensuring QSM’s quality control of stock.

3D Laser Cutting

QSM’s 3kw fiber laser provides the most incredible precision tube cutting solutions to tubular, structural and long product sections. The Rotary Index means that there is capability to process tube, channel, and angular profiles with a fast changeover between flat sheet and tubes in one machine, adding value for our manufacturing customers by offering a ‘kit form’ of parts prepared for assembly.

Some of the machine’s features include:

  • Touch Probe Technology – The tube can often be bowed, bent, twisted, or squashed, which creates processing problems. The ENSISRI is equipped with a touch probe that measures the tube and offsets any holes as required to ensure accurate positioning.
  • Synchronous, Dual Chuck Rotation – The ENSISRI has a main drive chuck and a support chuck which are both driven synchronously to ensure that the profile being cut is not twisted during processing. It also means scratching does not occur when cutting round tubes, allowing for higher quality parts to be manufactured.
  • 3kw Power – The ideal choice for tube cutting applications as it provides fast, stable cutting and piercing, without the possibility of inner tube damage that higher power tube cutting systems can suffer from.

Smart Bending

A great addition to a laser cutting machine is a bending machine. QSM’s smart press, the Amada HG1003-ATC is considered state-of-the-art technology and is a game changer when it comes to bending. Amada engineered the HG ATC as the ideal solution for variable lot sizes and complex tool layouts. The Automatic Tool Changer (ATC) can load the most complex tool layout within three minutes and allows operators of varied experience levels to efficiently utilise this bending system. Quick tool setups achieved by the ATC gives users the ability to introduce rush jobs seamlessly and triple or quadruple the amount of setups performed each day.

Some of the machine’s features include:

  • Automatic Tool Changer (ATC) – The machine stores high-precision tooling and is equipped with four manipulators  that place punches and dies along the length of the press brake to suit the programmed part.
  • Bend Indicator Sensor (BIS) – Automatic detection and compensation of material spring back.
  • Dynamic Hydraulic Crown Bed – Automatic compensation for any ram deflection to achieve consistent bend angles throughout the entire length of the machine.
  • 8 Axis Back Gauge – High speed movement on all alix ensures that the gauge fingers are positioned as quickly as the operator positions the part.
